The site of a former Advanced Landing Ground, a temporary airfield built to support the D Day landings in 1944 and only used for a few months. Construction began in August 1943 and was complete by the beginning on March 1944. Coolham airfield was one of seven Advanced Landing Grounds which were built in Kent and Sussex in 1943 and 1944 to ensure air superiority during the greatest coastal invasion in history, as the Allied Forces landed in France on June the 6th 1944 to begin the task of freeing the oppressed nations of Europe from Hitler’s armies. The first mission was flown on April 26th. Missions were flown virtually every day during May and June. Activities on the Airfield were terminated on the 15th of July 1944. Altogether some 7 fighter squadrons were based at Coolham.
Horsham Heritage Trails
This is a walk that will give you a brush with history, that spans continents and the centuries. You will be made welcome at the Selsey Arms pub which has stood at Coolham for over 300 years, with links to smugglers and more recently with the allied airmen who served at the Coolham airbase in 1944. In the late 1820’s the road from Cuckfield to Billingshurst was pegged out by Sir Charles Burrell of Knepp and your walk will start on the straight section of road from Coolham towards Billingshurst. At the first bend , you will follow the signs to the Blue Idol, the Quaker Meeting House founded by William Penn. Penn’s legacy went on to include the founding of Philadelphia and the colony that became the State of Pennsylvania. The garden is always open in daylight hours, and visitors are welcome to the Meeting House on Fridays between March and November.
Knepp Estate & Castle
Knepp is a 3,500 acre estate just south of Horsham, West Sussex. Since 2001, the land – once intensively farmed - has been devoted to a pioneering rewilding project. Using grazing animals as the drivers of habitat creation, and with the restoration of dynamic, natural water courses, the project has seen extraordinary increases in wildlife. Extremely rare species like turtle doves, nightingales, peregrine falcons and purple emperor butterflies are now breeding here; and populations of more common species are rocketing.
The vision of the Knepp Wildland Project is radically different to conventional nature conservation in that it is not driven by specific goals or target species. Instead, its driving principle is to establish a functioning ecosystem where nature is given as much freedom as possible. The aim is to show how a ‘process-led’ approach can be a highly effective, low-cost method of ecological restoration - suitable for failing or abandoned farmland - that can work to support established nature reserves and wildlife sites, helping to provide the webbing that will one day connect them together on a landscape scale.
The story of Nyetimber is one of decades of craftsmanship, passion, and a pioneering spirit. Our uncompromising attention to detail and singular desire to produce wines worthy of the most joyous of celebrations, drives us to create the very finest expressions of the Estate.
Spread across several separate sites, our vines are perfectly suited to the greensand and chalk soils of Sussex, Hampshire and Kent. The gentle south-facing slopes allow for the best possible exposure to the English sunshine, ensuring our grapes achieve the optimum level of ripeness before harvest.

Visited today for lunch, the food was sublime and the service excellent, will definitely return.
We took my mum here for mother's Day lunch. What a brilliant pub. Staff all really friendly (including the beautiful pub dog, Piper!). Food was amazing and very fairly priced. Nice clientele. Interesting ties to RAF Coolham with lots of RAF memorabilia in the pub. If you like traditional, down to earth, British pubs then you can't really do any better.
